I see a lot of people complaining about the color palette. These pencils are 100% lightfast. That affects the color choices because bright colors are usually not lightfast. Reds, pinks, purples etc...tend not to have good lightfastness. Also, Derwent professional lines (not Chromaflow) tend to lean towards natural colors, wildlife, landscape colors. So lots of muted greens, browns and desaturated blues, tawny pinks. The Lightfast line is for professional artists. Its color palette serves that clientele. That said, it's perfectly OK not to like them. I have seen professional artists say that they get the Lightfast and the Luminance, which also is 100% lightfast, and the two sets really work well together, each one filling in holes in the color lineup. Of course, we're talking about 2 very expensive lines. I have found a few nicks and oddities on the stray Derwent pencil but nothing that I don't see elsewhere. I originally got the 24 set (it was the largest set available at my Blick) and I did find the colors curious and the pencils a bit dry and scratchy. But they grew on me, especially as I got used to other Derwent lines like the Coloursoft and the Drawing set. The latter is only 24 and all muted natural colors. My love of those sets got me hankering for more of those woodsy greens etc... Now I really appreciate them.
I’m currently coloring with them and find them lovely. I love coloursoft and just got the drawing pencils. I have no problems not having bright colors. I simply don’t want the same colors. I would rather have only 72 than such similar colors. That’s all. Luminance does a good job of “stepping” their colors even if they are more natural colors. I do appreciate you and for taking the time to comment. 💕💕
@@jazzydoodledesigns I'm glad you're liking them. I was going to add, that I think it's Jenny's Crayons channel did a video on how using the Derwent burnisher brightens the colors. She was sort like "I found the secret to using these pencils!" So that's always an option. If I had to pick between the Lightfast or the Luminance, I'd pick the latter, but the two sets together are great.
@vishneva2000 I don’t think Lightfastness is an excuse to justify a poor color palette. Caran d’Ache and Faber Castell did a much better job. I bought the 100 Derwent Lightfast color set around two weeks ago and also have the same feeling of dissapointment. I mean, they are ok and there are some nice colors, but i have the feeling that i only have 50- 60 colors, not 100…. No other reviewer had warned me of this… now I find myself having to buy a LOT of the Caran d Ache Luminance open stock to complete some missing colors of the same family… it would have been a much better way to go buying the Caran d’Ache Luminance 100 set and then buying some single Derwent Lightfast open stock…. that would have been DEFINITELY a much better option.
@@argento1111 The Polychromos aren't 100% Lightfast. I just looked at the list of fugitive colors and it's mostly reds, pinks and light blues. Well, I guess that's why all the major companies have color charts on their sites, so we can check out the color lineup. As I wrote, I initially was underwhelmed with the Lightfast. But using the Drawing set and other Derwent lines, which do somewhat veer towards natural colors (except the Chromaflow, which I love but it's geared towards colorists so it's much brighter). But then I was also watching artists like Natasha Newton, Helen Cryer and Alyona Watercolour do various color palette videos and I really saw the beauty in the Lightfast. I do love the Luminance pencils. Many people have found the Lightfast and Luminance compliment each other and if you search RUclips you'll find there's videos about putting the two sets together and swatch charts that blend the two color lines. (if you have the Ruby Charm Colors Big Book of Swatches there is a combined chart). I also like feel of the Luminance a wee bit better than the Lightfast. I hope the Lightfast grow on you, since they are such an investment. I would suggest looking up those videos by those artists I mentioned. They'll do a "my favorite pencils..." or "my favorite blue pencils..." And they talk about the quality of each color. It's very interesting. And one picks up good tips on how to use colors like the "Mars Black" in interesting ways. I also recommend the Coloursoft. You might not want to drop money on another set so soon but check out open stock on their light blues and pinks and lavenders. There's some great options.
I’m thinking the reason the colour palette is the way it is is because the other lighter colours didn’t do great in the lightfast tests. So while they may have wanted to include them, they curated a set geared towards the artist that will be selling their artwork.
I am sure that there is truth to that but I would rather have less pencils than two samey pencils Just me being picky but I think they could have made them a little less similar
I personally love them, they are so pigmented and they dont really crumble like my luminance do.They are expensive even in the UK,but as you can buy them on open stock that helps.
I bought the 100 Set and paid 223 Euros in Amazon Germany (around 240-250 US dollars). As soon as i finished the swatch i was disappointed. The Luminance would have been a much better choice, so well… too late now, i will continue building up my Luminance colllection open stock. I still have mixed feelings about their performance, they fell too “sticky” after a couple of layers, and some colours get a bit “grainy” finish… but maybe istill have to get used to them, dont know yet…. Thank you for your great review, i was dissaponted and now i am pissed. I watched a LOT of reviews and nowbody warned me of this. Unfortunately your video came 10 days too late !!
I’m just astounded at their color choices. We have many cheap pencil sets that do better than that. As they are great quality they can stay on my list😂 buuut they have moved a few places. Thanks so much for another great review!
I can't stand them. The color palette is horrible, and I know quite a bit about pigments.. there are plenty of lightfast pigments. The 12 set doesn't even contain a mid tone blue or a cool red... how the heck are you supposed to blend colors without basic primaries? The price is outrageous... they lay down chunky and don't like to blend.. and don't get me started on the quality. They are so miserable to color with I just finally rehomed mine, I wouldn't even mix them in with other pencils. I have purchased open stock and small sets from four different vendors and have so many crooked cores, like a third of what I have is crooked. I have a red I can't even use because it's so crooked the wood goes all the way to the point when sharpened. I have a yellow ochre with a knot in the middle of it and no print. I have some that are literally warped horizontally so the entire pencil is crooked if you set it on a flat surface, I have several others where the print is off center or crooked so it's barely legible. I've had pencil sets that cost $25 with better quality. None of that should be happening in an artist quality pencil.. but they get by because of hype. I'd rather color with just lightfast Polys any day, half the price, excellent quality, beautiful laydown on most papers, and you will wind up with the same colors anyway. 100% check whatever your favorite pencil set is for lightfastness and then just use those colors if you really are concerned.. and you only need to be concerned if you are producing work for display in full light.
Mine don’t seem to have problems being off center or crooked. I will be curious to see how much I like them having used them more. I appreciate the feedback and your comments about the palette are spot on! 💕
I bought the 100 set and was very disappointed. Many were off centred and they have a very sticky texture with alot of them resulting in a blotchy and at times streaky finish especially in heavy applications. It's like the pigments are sticking to themselves resulting in clumping and a very uneven finish. I hate them so much and so many are affected they will more than likely rot on my shelf never to be used. I saved for 2yrs believing all the rave reviews and have never been this disappointed by a product before. So sad I really expected more or at least be as good as my polychromos.
@jazzydoodledesigns have been thinking about it but you are still always losing some money, just wish I had known before I bought them. Lesson learned the hard way ,don't put your full faith in reviews and always test some open stock first.

The best pencils that I use 👍
I love how they feel and work!💕
They are beautiful pencils I have the 36 set and I love them.. thank you for sharing your thoughts ❤❤❤😊😊😊xxx

Keep watching I’ve been doing some experimenting and I may have a video that can help you I’m hoping to have it out next week
I wonder if they had to do that palate to keep all of them lightfast.
Not sure but Derwent did 100 so …. I still like them

Ok I’ll put some greens on my next Blick order. Thank you!
Not trying to be bossy lol.
Gentle guidance is what my Grandmother called it😂😂
